Getting ready to write the article and putting the date on the file name brings back some memories of yesteryear. The date is 10-4.
To some of you this brings back memories as well. There is an old communication device called a CB. That stands for Citizen’s Band Radio. This technology was invented by Al Gross in 1945. There are still many in use today, mostly in the trucking industry.
Why use this technology today? There are certain advantages, such as no license required, not cell network needed, and they work completely off the grid. During power failures, this technology will still work. There is a limited coverage area of a few miles, but the ability to give and receive updates from other truckers proves to be valuable in many instances.
The popularity of the CB was at its height in the 1970s. There were several movies, songs, and other ways that the CB was featured. Being off the grid also applies to other ventures, such as off-road adventurists, boating enthusiasts, and hobbyists. The ability to use one without having to be FCC licensed is another favorable factor for many.
The CB operates on a direct simplex mode and that means that a person must wait for the other person to let up on the mike to say what they would like to say. This may seem like old news and not something to be desired, but many people still use this technology to good effect.
What’s the point of this trip down memory lane? Well, just because something is old, does not mean that it has no application today. There is something to be gleaned and learned from the time when CBs were more popular, and knowing they are still in use today may someday prove to be very useful. There is no telling when you or someone you know may need a CB. Many today look at the Bible as some old ancient antiquated outdated book. They firmly believe that it holds very little value in the ‘advanced’ world of the 21st century. The same people would not be impressed with the CB either. However, the Bible is far more useful than any technology of today or yesterday. The Bible can change lives in the most positive way more than any other thing that is accessible now or ever. EVER. The Bible, unlike some technology items, will never go out of style. The principles, commands, and examples are as vital today as they have ever been. May more people embrace and follow the Bible, the Word of God.
