Dan's Corner
There is a website that is dedicated to informing people about National Days. They will keep you posted on each day of the year and what particular thing is being honored or recognized for that day. It seems that this phenomenon is constantly expanding. In other words, each day has multiple things that are being touted. Most of you will read this on Sunday May 5.
Here are just a few for May 5: National Astronaut Day, National Lemonade Day, National Hoagie Day, and National Totally Chipotle Day. All these are accurate and not even all the days listed on nationaldaycalendar.com
The website will give you the history, if known, of the day and how it began to be celebrated on this day. There are some interesting stories. If you have never thought about this type of thing, perhaps your curiosity is piqued.
There was a time in the first century when people would have really liked the ability to view or hear about new things instantaneously as we have this ability today. They lived in Athens, Greece and sought to learn and hear new things all the time. Many visitors came to find out about these things as well (Acts 17:21).
Paul taught these people about the God of Heaven and how He is different from the idols that were being made by men to be worshiped. He is the one true God, who desires for all men to repent and turn to Him.
How we view the worth of something matters as to how we will spend time doing it or not doing it. Nothing wrong with spending some time learning about things online that are wholesome, such as National Days.
However, it is far more important not to neglect the things of God. Like the Athenians, we must know and remember that we will be judged one day as to how we treated the true God of Heaven. May we all desire to be right in His sight and spend each day bringing glory to Him.
