Evangelism is a vital work of the church.

Evangelism is a vital work of the church. When a

congregation of the Lord’s church does not put an emphasis on this

aspect of their work, then there is a danger of the congregation slowly

dying out. There are three ways a congregation may grow in number.

One way is for members to move into the area and decide to be

recognized as a member under the guidance of that congregation.

Another way is for the members to have children who grow up and

become members. The third way is the one that requires more time

and effort, that is evangelism.

What exactly is evangelism? This work can be accomplished

in many ways and all members can and should be involved. One way

is simply talking to people to gauge their interest in spiritual matters.

Another is to actively invite people to services at the local

congregation. Hosting events where the public is invited and

encouraged to participate is another way to reach people. All of these

are ways to get people ‘in the door’. However, getting them to the

building is not the end goal of evangelism. More on that later.

Having an online presence is a way that should not be

ignored in today’s world. Many people today do research online for

many reasons and for many things. Spiritually minded people will

seek knowledge online. Having an active online presence is needed in

today’s world. A website along with a Facebook, YouTube, or

Instagram account with frequent updates is useful in drawing

attention to a congregation that is engaged and thriving. Again, that

is not the end goal of evangelism. All these things we have discussed

are tools. When used properly the tools allow for the opportunity to

set up a Bible study with a person. That is the end goal. Not to

convert the person, that is the reward of evangelism. The goal of

studying with them is something we can actively do, whether they

decide to obey is up to them and how they react to God’s word. God

gives the increase (1 Corinthians 3:6-7).

Jesus tells us to teach, preach, and make disciples (Matthew

28:18-20; Mark 16:15-16). To make that happen we must go and do

the work. The idea is to be ‘going’ all the time. Please pray for and

look for opportunities every day. God will provide us those

opportunities, we must be ready and willing to take full advantage

when He does.
