When Words Communicate
By now many of you may have realized that words are a means of communicating. Some of you may also have come to the conclusion that this guy likes words. That would be accurate and maybe an underestimated idea. Words are awesome. Not just because they bring abstract concepts to life, but the right word at the right time will bring information and increase understanding to a person.
In this writer’s pursuit of learning, one of the things that pop up in my email for me is different websites devoted to learning about words. Recently the origin of ‘o’clock’ was given in one of those messages.
Seems like an everyday word that, frankly, I had not really wondered where it originated. Turns out that in the 14th century mechanical time pieces replaced sundials. Most had a bell that sounded at the top of the hour. The French word for bell ‘cloche’ became the English word for clock. So the term ‘of the clock’ came to be to let people know the time. Interesting then, that we only use it for the top of the hour. Eventually the term was shortened to o’clock. Now you know.
God uses words to communicate to us many things in His Holy Word. His words are way more important than any man has to share. May all of us determine to read, study, and apply the words from God to our lives. May His words become a big part of our lives today and every day.
Q: Where can we go to find the words that lead to eternal life?
A: Only to the Lord. (John 6:66-69)
