Biblical Self Care

Biblical Self Care

Self care may get a bad rap sometimes. Some may think that getting away from things for a bit may seem selfish. On some level it is selfish. However, there is a biblical principle in play when a person takes time for themselves. The concept of self care was not foreign to Jesus for one thing. He often got away to pray alone. That was His way of recharging and renewing. Definitely an example to follow as inall things.

Jesus taught that we should love God with all that we are and to love our neighbor as ourselves. Many will emphasize the loving of God and neighbor, but may miss that loving our neighbor involves the loving of ourselves. One way to show love to yourself is to take care of you.

How can anyone help someone else if they are not taking care of themselves? To ask is to answer, a person must be capable of taking care of self so that they can better care for others. This is true in the physical sense and the spiritual.

If we do not have a good image of ourselves, then we may not view others as we should. The Bible teaches us to deny ourselves, which means to give up our will for the will of God in Christ. This is the beginning of taking care of our spiritual needs. In order to do this properly intentional routines and habits must be formed in a person’s life.

Where should a person start? First, learn what God has decreed a person must do to become a child of God. If you would like to study the Bible with someone, please reach out to any member here at this congregation. After becoming a child of God, a Christian, then a person needs to begin living for the Lord Jesus Christ. This will include regularly attending services, reading and studying God’s Word, praying to Him, and looking for opportunities to serve in the local congregation.

May all Christians take care of themselves and do their best so that they can help others in the best way.
